Honda Factory Tour - 23 Feb 2009
As part of the learning enhancement process, on Monday, 23 February 2009 10.30AM, a group of 50 students from Operations Management OPR1010 class visited Honda Factory in Sayama-shi, Saitama prefecture. The group was accompanied by Prof Kurata who is teaching the class and Toru Wada, an administrative staff from GSIM.
The journey took about 3 hours, excluding the one-hour lunch stop-over at Akagi-Kogen service area. The group reached the factory at about 2.30PM and was greeted by two friendly engineers who then split the group into two sub-groups and took them to car assembly sites to observe the production process of Honda automobiles. Equipped with one headset for every student, and supported by Prof Kurata’s translation, students were able to understand the briefings while observing the production processes.
After visiting the assembly sites, the group headed to a room where a corporate video of Honda Saitama factory was presented. Following the video presentation, Q&A session was held to clarify any doubts. IUJ students participated actively in the discussion, with Prof Kurata acting as the translator and intermediator.
As a token of visit from Honda, IUJ students were given a corporate cap, brochure and a plastic container. Before leaving the factory, the group visited Honda car showroom and took group pictures there. It was really a fruitful and enjoyable trip.

Pokayoke in IUJ - 3
Product Design : Smoke Detector in Dormitory Room
Location : Student Dormitory (SD1, SD2 and SD3)
Mistake Prevention : Fire Hazard
Smoke detector is installed in every room in the student dormitory. Although shared kitchen is provided in each dormitory, some students still prefer to cook light meals in their rooms. The smoke detector functions to prevent fire hazard. When it detects a large amount of smoke, it will alert the Security Center, which will then alert the Minami Uonuma City Fire Prevention Department to send fire brigades to the location.

(IPA: [poka joke]) is a Japanese term that means "fail-safing", "Foolproof" or "mistake-proofing" — avoiding (yokeru) inadvertent errors (poka)) is a behavior-shaping constraint, or a method of preventing errors by putting limits on how an operation can be performed in order to force the correct completion of the operation. The concept was formalised, and the term adopted, by Shigeo Shingo as part of the Toyota Production System. Originally described as Baka-yoke, but as this means "fool-proofing" (or "idiot proofing") the name was changed to the milder Poka-yoke.

Pokayoke in IUJ - 2
Product Design : Barcode detector
Location : Main entrance of IUJ Library (MLIC Building 2nd Floor)
Mistake Prevention : Stealing books from library or forgetting to check-out the books at
the loan counter
Two body-sized barcode detectors are installed just near the main entrance of IUJ Library (MLIC Building 2nd Floor). Whenever students leave the library, the detector will beep if it detects that there are some books from the library that have not been checked-out at the loan counter. Although the barcode detector’s main purpose is to prevent students from stealing the library books, sometimes students can forget to check-out the books from the loan counter. Thus, this detector serves a secondary purpose to remind those forgetful students.

Product Design : Door knob/ lock
Location : All IUJ student dormitory rooms
Mistake Prevention : Accidentally locking the room from inside
The door lock in IUJ student dormitory room (SD2, SD3) is designed in such a way that it prevents somebody to accidentally lock the room from inside, when he or she wants to leave the room. Consider a typical bad example of lock design using a button mechanism: a button is accidentally pressed from the knob (inside the room). When the door is closed, it is locked from inside. However, the lock design of IUJ dormitory room doesn’t use the pressing button mechanism. When a person wants to leave his room, he can only lock the door using his key. Since there is no other ways to lock the room except by using key, this lock design prevents him from accidentally locking his room from inside.
